F1 course targets "ignored" youngsters

Most disadvantaged 16- and 17-year-olds are being “ignored” with their chances of finding work “rapidly declining”, according to children’s charity Barnardos.

The charity argues that 18-year-olds and above are being targeted by government reforms to tackle unemployment while those younger are being overlooked.

“Britain’s uneven playing field is causing an entire generation of the most disadvantaged teenagers to become ‘lost in transition’,” said chief executive Anne Marie Carrie.

However, this week disadvantaged youngsters in London, aged 16 and 17, will be the first to benefit from an innovative new project that aims to set them on the path to a new career.

The free F1 course – run by Let Me Play, Futsal UK and Sportiv8 – combines playing futsal, an exciting form of football, along with gaining qualifications that could lead to jobs in sports coaching and beyond.

And there are still places available for youngsters with a passion for football and a desire to transform their futures through sport.

Youngsters help Children in Need with Glee

Young performers inspired by the hit TV show Glee helped raise £3000 for the BBC’s Children on Saturday night.

Schools and youth club from across Camden ditched their local rivalries to come together to put on a spectacular show at the Shaw Theatre near Euston.

A cast of 99 youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds took part in the production - organised by Let Me Play - that including songs Don’t Stop Believing by Journey, Raise your Glass by Pink and Baby by Justin Bieber.

The Mayor of Camden was in the vast audience made up of friends, family and fans. The show was a sell-out and a huge success, not only for the performers but also for the children set to benefit from the generous donations.

It’s the game that launched the careers of Brazilian greats such as Ronaldo and Ronaldinho and now Futsal is set to transform the prospects of disadvantaged youngsters in London.

This Wednesday the first group of recruits aged 16-18 - who are not in full-time education, employment or training - will start the innovative and free F1 Sports Course that aims to set them on the path to a new career.

And there are still places available for youngsters with a passion for football and a desire to transform their futures through sport.

The F1 Course - run by Let Me Play, Futsal UK and Sportiv8 - combines time on the pitch playing Futsal, a pioneering form of football, along with gaining qualifications that could lead to jobs in sports coaching and beyond.

Times have never been tougher for many young people with record youth unemployment and limited opportunities for those leaving school with few qualifications. For individuals this can lead to apathy, isolation from the rest of society and even anti-social behaviour.

However the free F1 Course – which is valued at over £4000 - will give youngsters the qualifications, skills and confidence to take the next step. Recruits will get JOMA training kit, coaching from top pro clubs and City & Guilds or NVQs in sports.

Over 30 weeks the recruits will spend three days a week at the interactive centre that enables dynamic learning in a lively environment - ensuring boring classrooms are a thing of the past.

There are currently bases in North and West London with similar centres in East and South London set to follow.

Let Me Play went from strength to strength in what became a very significant year. In 2010, Let Me Play achieved the following:

Delivery of 23 Residential Camps across the UK over the Summer within 5 weeks:
- 15 commissioned by the Youth Hostel Association (10 Street Dance & 5 Football).
- Let Me Play Flagship Camps: Basketball, Football Trials, K-Swiss Tennis, Street Dance.
- The 3rd annual Reading FC Football Camp.
- New for 2010 - the successful launch of the Southampton FC Football Camp, Athletics Camp and Cheerleading Camp.

Delivery of Government Commissioned Projects:
- Continuation and successful delivery of the Weekend Project, working with youth offenders in Hammersmith & Fulham.
- Continuation and successful delivery of the COO-L Project, providing opportunities for young people from low income families and in care in Camden.

Delivery of our London Schools Programme:
- One of the main areas of growth, Let Me Play worked with more than 50 schools across London, providing coaches to deliver sports, dance and positive activities within schools.
- Successful delivery of more than 10 non-residential summer camps across London.
- Let Me Play took on the Basketball Programme at Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College (London's biggest college). The men's team went on to win the British Colleges South East Division in an undefeated regular season.

Launch & Delivery of a Community Sports Programme called "Sports Hub":
- Based in Hammersmith, Let Me Play launched "Sports Hub", a place where the community can come together once a week and try a variety of sports: Basketball, Volleyball, Boxing, Street Dance.
- 2010 saw Let Me Play continue to grow in both standard of delivery and capacity to deliver programmes across the UK. Such growth is demonstrative of solid foundations, the drive to engage with increasing numbers of young people and a team of staff who embrace the Let Me Play brand.

Such growth allows strong plans and an excitement for what can be achieved in 2011 and beyond.

Working hard for a better future.

November has had an exciting month. From negotiating arrangements for 2010 to delivering Christmas hampers, we haven’t had time to stop. It’s all for good reason though, as we are working towards making 2010 the best year yet for Let Me Play and our programmes.
We’ve been working hard over last 30 days to develop a new sports camp, our Athletics Camp! This camp will enables young people to get an excellent experience within Track and Field events. The development of this camp seems timely within the Olympics ever approaching and the growth of demand from young people to compete in Athletics. We’ve limited places to 20 so if you know anyone interested do get in touch soon. All information will be up on www.letmeplay.co.uk over the next couple of weeks.One of most touching events we had this month was with a group of young people helping out the local community. Our Saturday night helpers put together a range of hampers and then delivered them to the local community. From crackers to cookies, jams to soups and tea to chocolates; the hampers got delivered to brighten the days of community members. The recipients were clearly touched and it made all the hard work from the young people worthwhile. As the festive period approaches we urge all our Let Me Play friends to spread a little happiness in whatever way they can.We’ll be back with more updates soon, if you have any questions or queries do get in touch!

Street Dance Camp - Elmhurst School for Dance

This STREET DANCE summer camp is a residential camp open to both boys and girls and is being held at the renowned Elmhurst School for Dance, a new state-of-the-art facility in Birmingham. The camp consists of a week of intensive dance tuition will all be in preparation for a filmed performance that will take place on the last day.

The camp will provide:

This is an opportunity to take your football and your playing career to the next level. We provide an intensive week of football training and provide a trial in front of Scouts.

This is a unique opportunity to be seen by scouts and learn what it takes to be a professional. We will provide accommodation, all your meals, training and the trial experience. The camp has limited availability and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Reading FC – Residential Camp - 2009!

Separate Boys and Girls Camp

Reading FC are pleased to be offering the Official Reading FC Residential Camp in partnership with Let Me Play again this summer. There are limited places and we have sent out a select number of letters inviting players to be a part of this experience.

The camp will be split, running a Boys Camp and Girls Camp and they will take place at the Licensed Victuallers’ School in Ascot from 9th to 14th August 2009. The camp allows young players to get closer to the club and will provide an exclusive insight into how Reading FC coach their young players into reaching their potential.

We have limited places! Participants that do secure a place can expect to receive:

· Accommodation and all meals.
· Coaching from highly qualified Reading FC Coaches who coach regularly with the Club. The Coaches are experts in talent identification, developing technical ability and tactical team play.
· Behind the scenes tour of the Club.
· Train at the Academy Centre where all promising young players at the Club play.
· Meet a Reading FC Footballer and hear what it is like to play for this professional side.

The camp will allow players to raise their skills both technically and physically through high level coaching in a fun and exciting environment. It’s an amazing opportunity for Reading FC fans aged from 10 to 16 to learn from club coaches.

Here’s your chance! This camp has been designed to teach young people about tennis and encourage participation. We have a team of excellent and qualified coaching staff which includes a mixture of professional coaches, academy coaches, professional and ex-professional players.
